Last week, the US currency was under pressure amid rising political risks in Washington. The dollar index (#DX) fell by more than 2.5%. The US dollar received the largest losses against the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen. Over the past week, the drop in USD/CHF and USD/JPY quotations exceeded 2.8% and 1.8%, respectively.
In the upcoming trading week, we recommend you to pay attention to the following events.
May 22nd, Monday
On Monday, the news background will be pretty calm.
In the Asian trading session, a number of statistics on trade in Japan will appear.
The publication of important economic reports from the EU and the US is not planned.
It is necessary to pay attention to the meeting of the Eurogroup, as well as the speeches of the FOMC representatives Harker and Kashkari.
Financial markets in Canada will be closed due to the holiday.
May 23rd, Tuesday
On Tuesday, we expect important statistics from Germany: data on the country’s GDP (09:00 GMT+3:00), the index of business activity in the manufacturing sector (10:30 GMT+3:00), the business climate index (11:00 GMT+3:00).
In the European trading session, the data on business activity in the Eurozone will be released. Representatives of the Bank of England will report on the economic situation and the inflation rate in the country.
Later, the data on the volume of wholesale sales in Canada (15:30 GMT+3:00) and statistics on the real estate market in the US (17:00 GMT+3:00) will be published.
May 24th, Wednesday
On Wednesday, the news background will be very eventful.
At 15:45 (GMT+3:00), the head of the ECB Draghi will hold a press conference. In the US trading session, the data on sales in the secondary housing market in the United States will be released.
At 17:00 (GMT+3:00), the Bank of Canada will take a decision on the monetary policy. At the moment, most experts believe that the regulator will leave the interest rate at the previous level of 0.50%. At the same time, it is necessary to follow closely the comments of the Central Bank representatives.
At 21:00 (GMT+3:00), the FOMC minutes will be published, which will indicate how the representatives of the Federal Reserve estimate the current economic situation in the country.
May 25th, Thursday
Office for National Statistics of Great Britain will publish revised data on the country’s GDP for the first quarter of 2017 (11:30 GMT+3:00).
The attention of the participants of the financial markets will be focused on the OPEC meeting, where the issue of extending the deadline for reducing oil production will be discussed.
May 26th, Friday
The trading week will end with the publication of important economic reports from the United States.
At 15:30 (GMT+3:00) the data on orders for durable goods will be released. The Bureau of Economic Analysis of the US will publish revised data on the country’s GDP for the first quarter of this year.
